Barbie honors Olympic fender Ibtihaj Muhammad with doll

Nov. 14 (UPI) — Barbie is honoring Muslim athlete Ibtihaj Muhammad with its first hijab-carrying doll.

Mattel, which manufactures Barbie, unveiled a special model doll within the 31-year-outdated Olympic fencer’s likeness Tuesday as the latest addition to its Sheroes collection.

“We Are so excited to honor @IbtihajMuhammad with a one-of-a-type #Barbie doll! Ibtihaj continues to encourage ladies and girls all over the place to break boundaries. #Shero #YouCanBeAnything @GlamourWOTY,” the Barbie authentic Twitter account wrote.

Muhammad turned into the primary Muslim American women to put on a hijab whereas competing for the united states at the 2016 Summer Time Olympics in Rio. Her doll is depicted carrying a white hijab and fencing uniform.

“Thanks @Mattel for announcing me as the newest member of the @Barbie Shero household!” the athlete captioned a photo on Instagram of herself with the toy.

The Sheroes collection additionally options dolls in line with Olympic gymnast Gabby Douglas, director Ava Duvernay, model Ashley Graham and ballerina Misty Copeland. Muhammad’s doll might be on hand in 2018.
